Etna: The summit craters

Enjoy this tour and know more about Etna, the highest active volcano. During this challenging trail – a few more than 30 km – varied landscapes will escort us, such as old lava flows, ancient and recent craters, deserts of lavic stone, brave little plants, and pine woods. We start at Rifugio Sapienza yard and ride onto a steep slope towards the Torre del Filosofo (Philosopher’s Tower), an ancient shelter a few steps away from the top of Etna. We pedal around the summit of the mountain, then rush in a long descent, passing by the white domes of the astronomical observatory of Pizzi Deneri, in Piano Provenzana. The road skirts the fracture – so called bottoniera – of the Sartorius mountains, eventually taking us back to the Rifugio Sapienza.
